EMT151 Emergency Medical Technician Part A  4 credits  (4 lec, 6 lab hrs/wk)

Provides instruction at the level of Emergency Medical Technician. Includes all cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary to develop student skills in the recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. This course will also build personal skills in hands on capabilities, and a positive attitude towards the patients they may care for.

EMT151L EMT Lab  2 credits  (3 lab, 2 lec lab hrs/wk)

This is the lab component of the Emergency Medical Technician Part A course. Includes cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary for an entry level EMT to safely enter a scene and learn to recognitze of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. This course will also build interpersonal and leadership skills (affect) of the entry level EMT.

EMT152 Emergency Medical Technician Part B  4 credits  (3 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)

Prerequisite(s): ( EMT151 )

Provides instruction at the level of Emergency Medical Technician. Includes all cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary to develop student skills in the recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. EMT152F EMT Part B Clinical  1 credit  (3 lab hrs/wk)

Practical lab does have components of invasive procedures. There are risks of infections and/or injury, and all aspects of the lab must have the highest degree of respect, procedure, and professionalism. Students will be subjected to invasive procedures, live patients and patient treatment simulations requiring consideration with lifting techniques.

EMT152L EMT Part B Lab  1 credit  (3 lab hrs/wk)

This is the lab component of the Emergency Medical Technician Part A course. Includes cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary for an entry level EMT to safely enter a scene and learn to recognitze of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. EMT153 Accelerated EMT  8 credits  (8 lec hrs/wk)

This course is a combination of both *EMT151 and *EMT152 and combines both courses into one term. This section of EMT153 is responsible for instruction at the level of Emergency Medical Technician. Includes all cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary to develop student skills in the recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. This course will also build personal skills in hands on capabilities, and a positive attitude towards the patients they may care for and completion will allow the student to sit for the NREMT exam.

EMT153F Accelerated EMT Clinical  1 credit  (3 lab hrs/wk)

The goal of this course is to develop a planned program of observation and practical experience with an organization providing emergency medical services. Students will perform the functions of an entry-level EMT under the guidance of a preceptor on an ambulance. Students will perform assessments and invasive procedures in a “real world” environment. Students will experience firsthand the skills and knowledge required to act in the capacity of an EMT. This course also continues the clinical internships as well.

This course may be taken 1 time for credit.

EMT153L Accelerated EMT Lab  3 credits

This course is a combination of both *EMT151 and *EMT152 lab clasess and combines both courses into one term. This section of EMT153 is responsible for instruction of hands on skills at the level of Emergency Medical Technician. Includes all cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary for students to be competent entry level EMTs. This course will also build personal skills in hands on capabilities, and a positive attitude towards the patients they may care for and completion will allow the student to sit for the NREMT exam.

EMT160 Advanced EMT Part A  5 credits  (4 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)

Provides instruction at the level of Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. Includes all cognitive (knowledge) and psychomotor (practical) skills necessary to develop student skills in the recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and proper emergency care procedures as outlined by the scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. This course will also build personal skills in hands on capabilities, and a positive attitude towards the patients they may care for. This is the second of a three-part course as set forth by the National EMS Education Standards. Failure of this course will require retaking the full sequence of EMT181, EMT182, EMT280 G. Course requirements: Current Oregon EMT License and in good standing with the Health Division.Current healthcare provider CPR card that meets or exceeds the 2015 American Heart Association ECC guidelines or equivalent standards approved by the Oregon Health Authority.

EMT162 EMT Intermediate  5 credits  (4 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)

Prerequisite(s): ( EMT160 and EMT161 )

This course prepares individuals for licensure in Oregon as an Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the Oregon EMT-Intermediate licensing examinations. Course requirements: Completed EMT161 with a grade C or better and have a current Oregon AEMT license in good standing with the Health Division. Current Healthcare Provider CPR card that meets or exceeds the 2015 American Heart Association ECC guidelines or equivalent standards approved by the Oregon Health Authority to register for this course.

EMT169 Emergency Medical Technology Rescue  3 credits  (2 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)

This training should provide a brief introduction into EMS/fire service rescue practices. Course topics will include but not limited to Auto Extrication, Rope Rescue, Water and Ice Rescue, Fire Ground Search and Rescue, Confined Space Rescue Situations. This course is designed to give students the skills necessary in order to begin rescue situations that are listed above. This is not an in-depth technical rescue course due to the limited time and limited degree of training resources available. In order to become certified in these fields there are other courses that must be attended.

EMT170 Emergency Response & Communication Documentation  2 credits  (4 lec hrs/wk)

Corequisite(s): ( EMT171 )

Covers principles of therapeutic communication, verbal, written, and electronic communications in the provision of EMS, documentation of elements of patient assessment, care and transport, communication systems, radio types, reports, codes, and correct techniques. This is a 5.5 week course.

EMT171 Emergency Response Transport  2 credits  (2 lec, 6 lab hrs/wk)

Corequisite(s): ( EMT170 )

This course covers the role and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) from Basic through Paramedic in regards to transportation of the patient. Other aspects include EMS systems, legal considerations in EMS, major incident response and safety precautions. This is a 5.5 week course.

EMT175 Intro Emergency Medical Services  3 credits  (3 lec hrs/wk)

This preparatory course integrates comprehensive knowledge of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems, safety/well being of the paramedic, and medical/legal and ethical issues, which is intended to improve the health of EMS personnel, patients, and the community.

EMT211 Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology  2 credits  (2 lec hrs/wk)

Lectures relating specific emergencies to the types of medications used for treatment. Includes classifications, actions, indications, administration and dosages, precautions and side effects of each of the medications used in prehospital treatment of medical and traumatic emergencies. In addition students learn common prescription medications found in the home. Failure of this course will require retaking the full sequence of EMT*296,*297,*298, and *291.

EMT218 Trauma Emergencies  4 credits  (3 lec, 2 lec lab hrs/wk)

This class establishes knowledge associated with pathophysiology, kinematics, assessment and management of trauma including blunt trauma, penetrating trauma, hemorrhage and shock, soft tissue trauma, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, head / face / neck trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, and abdominal trauma. Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification is also a requirement for this course and is embedded throughout the curriculum and schedule.

The goal of the first of a three term series in Paramedic education is to begin fundamentals on patient assessment, airway management and ventilation. Then focus on pathophysiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to include identification and treatments of related emergencies.This is the first of a three-part course as set forth by the National EMS Education Standards.

Students will continue assessments and treatments of "live" patients in a clinical setting as well.

EMT235 Basic EKG Interpretation  3 credits  (2 lec, 2 lec lab hrs/wk)

This class establishes knowledge associated with anatomy and physiology, electrophysiology, EKG equipment familiarization, and basic skills for interpreting sinus rhythms, atrial rhythms, junctional rhythms, atrioventricular blocks, ventricular rhythms, asystole and pacemaker rhythms with an introduction to 12 lead EKGs.

EMT236 Advanced EKG  2 credits  (1 lec, 2 lec lab hrs/wk)

This class establishes knowledge associated with anatomy and physiology, electrophysiology, EKG equipment familiarization, and advanced skills for interpreting sinus rhythms and dysrhythmias, atrial rhythms and dysrhythmias, junctional rhythms, atrioventricular blocks, ventricular rhythms and dsyrhythmias, asystole and pacemaker rhythms with an advanced understanding of 12 and 15 lead ECGs.

EMT239 Paramedic Clinical Practicum I  5 credits  (15 lab hrs/wk)

The first course of two courses designed to track Paramedic student progress in the clinical setting. Students will practice EMT and paramedic level skills under the supervision of a clinical preceptor on live patients. Students begin to integrate patient assessment, management and skills performance into clinical based practice.

EMT241 Crisis Resource Management  1 credit

An examination of crisis intervention techniques for the public safety and emergency response professional, covering initial intervention, communication strategies, assessment, and referral. Includes situation-specific approaches and explores the impact of intervention on the public safety and emergency response worker.

The goal of the first of a three term series in Paramedic education is to begin fundamentals on patient assessment, airway management and ventilation, and general pharmacology (to include medication administration and dosing). Then focus on pathophysiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to include identification and treatments of related emergencies.This is the first of a four-part course as set forth by the National EMS Education Standards. The goal of EMT297 is to focus on anaphylactic, toxicological, environmental, geriatric, pediatric, obstetric, gynecologic, neonatal, and endocrine emergencies; infectious diseases and trauma care. Applies didactic knowledge to campus-based laboratory skills practice and clinical patient care in the hospital setting.The student will also be introduce to assessments and treatments of live patients in a clinical setting. The student will perform skills acquired in classroom and laboratory settings under the guidance of a preceptor to achieve required competencies. This is the second of a four-part series as set forth by the National EMS Education Standards. Failure of this course will require retaking the full sequence of EMT296, EMT297, EMT298, and EMT291.
